Erreger der FSME ist ein RNA-Virus aus der Familie der Flaviviren. Derzeit sind drei (europäisch,östlich, fernöstlich) Subtypen bekannt (Heinz 1999). Nach der Infektion mit einem Subtyp besteht eine lebenslange Immunität auch gegenüber den beiden anderen Subtypen.
